Your First Photo Casting Directors See

Just for a single, smaller film role casting directors might receive about 7,000 submissions, about 96 thumbnail headshots per page. They're scanning fast, making gut decisions in fractions of a second. To them, your headshot essentially a sorting tool, that should instantly answer three questions:

1. Is this person real? The number one thing casting directors agree on: your headshot should look exactly like the person who walks into the audition room. Outdated or over-retouched photos that don't match reality waste everyone's time and kills credibility you worked hard to get.

2. Does this person look the part? Type, age range, energy. It should be visible in a fraction of a second. A common reason for immediate dismissal is simply "you don't look the part" – and that's not necessarily because you don't fit. It's your generic headshot just didn't reveal that.

3. Does personality come through? Only about 0.3% of headshots truly transmit the actor's personality – not just appearance. With a pool of 2,000 submissions, that's roughly six people who genuinely stand out.

Let's make you one of them.

Why Me

As a former actor, I know how to make your headshots work in your favour.

As a Peter Hurley's Headshot Crew Associate, one of 200 certified photographers worldwide, I use a proven system developed by the best in the industry.

I understand the craft from the inside – the difference between a headshot that "just looks nice" and one that communicates your type, your range, and your castability in a thumbnail.

During the session, we'll nail your primary casting type – and then push beyond it, giving you the range of looks that expands what you get called in for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bring 3-4 outfit changes that reflect different character types you're suited for. Solid colors work best – avoid busy patterns, logos, or all-white clothing. Think about the roles you typically audition for: commercial looks might need casual, approachable clothing, while theatrical shots could benefit from more dramatic pieces.

Get plenty of sleep the night before and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol or salty foods that can cause puffiness. For men, decide whether you want to be clean-shaven or have facial hair. For women, professional makeup is recommended. Come with clean, styled hair and arrive 15 minutes early to settle in.

Commercial headshots show you as approachable and friendly – the kind of person who could be your neighbor. These have a lighter, more open expression. Theatrical headshots reveal more intensity and emotional range. Most actors need both types. We'll discuss your casting goals and create shots that serve your specific needs.

Plan for 2-3 hours. Unlike corporate headshots that focus on a single professional look, actor sessions require multiple character types and expressions. We need time to work through different outfits, test various angles, and capture the range that gives you options for different auditions.

You'll review 50+ images during the session and select the ones you want to keep. Most actors choose 3-5 final headshots covering different looks and character types. You pay only for the images you select, plus the session fee.

You'll see all images immediately after the session and select your favorites on the spot. Final retouched images are delivered within 72 hours via digital download. Files are high-resolution and formatted for both print and digital submissions.
